I didn’t think about shopping every day. I didn’t even think about shopping every week. But suddenly I’d find myself craving something I hadn’t wanted seconds before.

I’d hear about a good book and suddenly find myself on the retailer web page. Or I’d walk into a store to replace my mascara, then notice the rows of eyeshadows telling me I probably wasn’t wearing the right color and should try something new. I had no idea what BB cream was (and I still don’t really know), but every advertisement told me it would make my skin perfect, so I started to think I needed that. Then I noticed that the scarf next to the hooded sweatshirt I was considering buying (from the approved shopping list) looked like it was my style. Maybe I needed that too! Of course, I didn’t need, and didn’t buy, any of it.

When you hear the word shopaholic, you might picture a woman in high heels carrying handfuls of shopping bags full of clothes, shoes, and makeup. That’s what I have always pictured, likely because that’s what the media and popular stories have shown us to be true. There are books about shopaholics. Entire book series about shopaholics. Movies about shopaholics. And the picture on the cover is always the same: a woman in high heels carrying handfuls of shopping bags full of clothes, shoes, and makeup.

For that reason, I have never identified with the term.

👍Worth reading

Absolutely amazing and just the right time. I started my year of less before the book because of my gut feeling, continued and will keep itt after reading.
