When Christine is crossing the Halfpenny Bridge in Dublin. Adam is there, poised, threatening to jump. Adam is desperate – but Christine makes a crazy deal with him. His 35th birthday is looming and she bets him she can show him that life is worth living before then.

It's a difficult thing to do, and for Christine who's obsessed with self-help guides (she owns shelves of books with titles such as How to Enjoy Your Life in Thirty Simple Ways and How to Quiet Your Mind and Get Some Sleep), suddenly she doesn't really know what to do. And at the back of her head... an incident still haunts her.

Rather than the archetypal leading man, Cecelia Ahern shows us the one thing truly worth falling in love with - and that's life itself.

Forgive us if high school novels takes us back to our own memories (and makes our heart swell). Because young love is very dizzying. It's the classic tale of a good girl who is forced to be lab partners with Alex, that bad boy from across town. And how the both of them, in very trying situations and circumstances, bring out the best in each other.

But this is not your typical fluff romance because Elkeles deals with the very real problem of urban gang violence and influence. Alex has to come to terms with his past and future if he chooses to live like he used to. And there's also the difficult choices and pressures of losing your virginity while in high school. It's not an easy read sometimes, but it pays off.

This is as chick-lit as it is. Wedding planner job? Check. Vegas quickie wedding? Check. An even quicker divorce? Old flame turning life upside down? Check and check. Of course, because this is in the "happily-ever-after" shelf, there is no doubt what happens to these two who haven't crossed paths in years. But should she really have taken him back after that wild weekend in Vegas?

Hey, if you love someone, you love them, right?

At the end of "Eat, Pray, Love", Elizabeth Gilbert fell in love with Felipe – a Brazilian-born man of Australian citizenship. Resettling in America, the couple swore eternal fidelity to each other, but also swore to never, ever, under any circumstances get legally married.

But when terrible circumstances force them to get married (thanks, US immigration!), Gilbert has to tackle her fears and apprehensions of marriage, after being burnt by her first.

Can a BFF turn into a... BF? Yes - if fate has a hand in it. But when Alex's family moves to America, their friendship is threatened by bad luck, misunderstandings and long distances. Now if there's any BFF couple that we want to root for (and it'll pay off, we promise), it's this one.

The cover looks like one of those harlequin novels that are cheesy but Promise Me Forever is anything but. Yes, it involves a dreamy hunk that Lauren Fairfield really desires, but at the core of it, this novel is really about two lost loves finding their way back to each other again. It's a romance novel through and through, no doubt about it, but its heartbreaking moments will definitely open the floodgates (we're talking about your eyes).

This may be Jojo Moyes' second novel, but my god is it a powerhouse. It's an epic one, with the story starting from the 50s about a bunch of women inhabiting an art-deco house. It's a long story - too long to properly summarize - but one thing to know: it's full of women who've had their desires and dreams snatched away from them. And so, 50 years later in the 2000s, can the women in the very same house escape from the clutches of oppression and obligation? And to find true love - whether it is in a man, or in their very own dreams?

You can't talk chick-lit without bringing up Marian Keyes. This one starts out terrible. Because on the day Claire gives birth to her first daughter, her husband James informs her that he's leaving her. Claire is left with a newborn daughter, a broken heart, and a postpartum body that she can hardly bear to look at.

Keyes chunky novel is packed with emotions that are quite masterfully written. And it reminds us: that the happy ending that you so wish for, is not necessarily the constant one that is written in all the books.

For fans of Keyes who are familiar with her tales of loveable heroines struggling to find Mr Right, her new book holds a shock. Because she touches on the destructive forces of domestic violence. This Charming Man explores how their love for this one man has shaped their lives. But in true Marian Keyes fashion, this is more than a story of four love affairs. It's a testament to the strength women find in themselves through work, friendship, and family, no matter what demons may be haunting their lives.
