The Kindred, genetically engineered human and animal hybrids, were originally created by Doctor Per Wolff to assist in the fight against terrorism which had spread across the world like a plague. But to Doctor Wolff, the Kindred were more than mere soldiers. They were the next logical step in human evolution and the future of the human race itself. So strong were his convictions, in fact, that Lucas, his six-year-old son, was made a Kindred in order to cure him of the leukaemia that was slowly killing him. He was the first. Almost thirty years later, with the fight against the terrorists long over, the Kindred were finally recognized as persons under the law, allowing them to be full members of society. While on one of his frequent walks one cool spring night, Lucas Wolff, now thirty-two-years-old, unexpectedly came upon a despondent young man who, unbeknownst to him, would change the course of his life forever.
