iernes.

Termino mi café y me levanto.

Tengo mucha hambre ', dice Leila. 'Oh, y no lo olvides. El próximo viernes vendrás a cenar a nuestra casa. Saheed está cocinando pollo.

'Genial', digo.

Friday. It’s the end of the working day. My friend Leila is in my office, drinking coffee. She tells me a story about one of her clients. We laugh.

‘Your clients are very difficult people,’ I say. Leila is a lawyer. But many of her clients are very poor people too. She does good work.

‘And what about you?’ says Leila. ‘You’re a private investigator, and your clients are often very difficult – and dangerous. Saheed worries about you. He likes you a lot, you know.’

Saheed is Leila’s brother. He’s a detective in the police – Detective Sergeant Saheed Patel. He and Leila are my best friends. Saheed worries about me a lot. I smile.

‘Saheed doesn’t need to worry about me,’ I say. ‘I can take care of myself.’

I finish my coffee and stand up. ‘Friday night – the best night of the week. What shall we do this evening? Go to the cinema?’

‘OK, but let’s eat first. I’m really hungry,’ Leila says. ‘Oh, and don’t forget. Next Friday you’re coming to dinner at our house. Saheed’s cooking chicken.’

‘Great,’ I say. Saheed’s chicken dinner is famous with all his friends.

Tomorrow morning, upload the Blandings file into the quotations folder on the office computer in the usual way. And then tell the staff about it. But just quietly. It’s just another quotation. Don’t do or say anything different. Just be normal.’

I stand up and put my coat on. ‘Nothing’s going to happen before tomorrow night, when they take their laptops home.’

‘Then you’re on the night watch,’ Jeff says. ‘And what do I do?’

‘Nothing,’ I say. ‘Stay at home.
