Have you ever wondered how wild animals know the difference between food and poison? It’s easy for us. If we have sensible parents they’ll ensure that we can’t get access to poisons until we are old enough to understand what they are. But how do wild animals manage? Mother Nature has equipped all creatures on the planet with various ingenious devices to help them to survive. I know that your cat is a domesticated pet and that you wouldn’t dream of feeding her poison. But she doesn’t know that. Have you noticed how a cat will first sniff her food when she is not certain about it? She might then sample a minute portion and either tuck in with gusto or eat tentatively. Occasionally she won’t touch it and just walk away with her tail in the air as if you had put down poison for her. That’s because you had!

The tobacco plant is of the same genus as deadly nightshade. It is a powerful poison and is used commercially as an insecticide. When it is handled in laboratories, the scientists are dressed in anti-contamination suits not dissimilar to those used in the handling of nuclear waste. A large bottle of this type of insecticide (15 ml: the size of a bottle of eye drops) has to be licensed. You cannot buy a whole gram of nicotine on the street like you could a gram of heroin.
Currently more than five million people die annually as a result of nicotine addiction. It might surprise you to learn that this figure has been increasing every year. The World Health Organization estimates that by the 2020s, the number of deaths will be in excess of 10 million yearly.
The average packet of twenty cigarettes contains .5 milligrams of nicotine per cigarette. It takes 1000 milligrams to make 1 gram. If you were to inject the nicotine content of just one cigarette directly into a vein, you would die. Please take my word for this and on no account test it out.

It’s not so much that smokers particularly enjoy a cigarette after a meal, but that an otherwise enjoyable occasion is actually made miserable if they aren’t allowed to smoke

One of the many common misconceptions about all drug addiction is that addicts only suffer withdrawal symptoms when they attempt to stop using the drug. In truth they suffer them from the moment the first dose begins to leave their bodies, and the only reason they take the next dose is to try to end the empty, insecure feeling that the previous dose creates

Am I lighting up to enjoy this smoke, or is it just habitual? If it were simply habitual, there would be little point in smoking that cigarette.

EXCUSE TO LIGHT JUST ONE MORE CIGARETTE

Think back to the time when you were a smoker and had mini-dramas, or major ones for that matter. No doubt you did light a cigarette, probably several, but can you ever remember thinking, ‘Isn’t life wonderful? I’ve smashed up my lovely car, but who cares? I’ve got this gorgeous cigarette to smoke.’ Again, by even contemplating having a cigarette at such times, you would be simply torturing yourself.

Never question your decision to stop. Remind yourself how lucky you are to be a non-smoker

Your brain won’t automatically split the difference and say to you: ‘Half of this is physical because of nicotine withdrawal and the other half is because you’re emotionally upset’.

when those bells do start ringing, reinforce your decision by understanding that your first reaction – ‘I want a cigarette’ – is nothing more than a conditioned reflex, a shadow memory that is responding to discomfort.
