Now an HBO series: the first volume in the New York Times–bestselling “enduring masterpiece” about a lifelong friendship between two women from Naples (The Atlantic).
Beginning in the 1950s in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples, Elena Ferrante’s four-volume story spans almost sixty years, as its main characters, the fiery and unforgettable Lila and the bookish narrator, Elena, become women, wives, mothers, and leaders, all the while maintaining a complex and at times conflicted friendship. This first novel in the series follows Lila and Elena from their fateful meeting as ten-year-olds through their school years and adolescence.
Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between two women.

    🚀Unputdownable

After all the positive reviews on the Internet I expected something very different. At first, I was bored and disappointed with the lack of a plot in Ferrante's novel, but a few hours into the book I found myself not being able to stop thinking about the friendship between main characters and comparing it with my childhood relationships. I only hope not to lose this interest before finishing all four Neapolitan novels.

at first, i wasn't sure about this book. but as i kept reading, it completely engaged me in the story and i couldn't leave it aside. finished it in a bit less than three days. the story is very well thought through and very well put together. the style is simple but not boring and it is perfect for the story it is trying to tell. the more i think about what've read the more i realise how much i enjoyed it.

Quotes

The plebs were us. The plebs were that fight for food and wine, that quarrel over who should be served first and better, that dirty floor on which the waiters clattered back and forth, those increasingly vulgar toasts. The plebs were my mother, who had drunk wine and now was leaning against my father’s shoulder, while he, serious, laughed, his mouth gaping, at the sexual allusions of the metal dealer.
