Michelle Sloan is a Scottish author best known for children’s books and historical fiction for adults. Her works include The Fourth Bonniest Baby in Dundee (2016), The Edinburgh Skating Club (2022), and Mrs Burke & Mrs Hare (2025). Sloan has been shortlisted for the BookBug Picture Book Award and regularly conducts school workshops across Scotland to encourage reading.
Michelle Sloan was born in Edinburgh. She is a trained primary teacher who also holds a degree in Drama and Theatre Arts. She has said, “With all my workshops, I endeavour to bring a new energy for books and literacy, fostering a joy of reading.” She now lives in Broughty Ferry with her family and engages with young audiences through interactive events involving puppets and creative activities.
Her debut children’s book, The Fourth Bonniest Baby in Dundee (2016), tells the story of a baby’s misadventures on the way to a local beauty contest. The book, written in lively rhyme, was praised for its humour and local flavour. Other notable works for children include This Bonny Baby, The Revenge of Tirpitz, Greyfriars Bobby: A Puppy's Tale, and the Animal Adventure Club series.
Sloan’s adult fiction debut, The Edinburgh Skating Club (2022), explores eighteenth-century Edinburgh through the eyes of Alison Cockburn, a poet who disguises herself as a man to infiltrate a male-only skating club. The novel juxtaposes historical events with a modern storyline featuring art historian Claire Sharp and the mystery surrounding the Skating Minister painting.
Her most recent book, Mrs Burke & Mrs Hare (2025), is a dark historical thriller set in the aftermath of the Burke and Hare murders. It follows the surviving accomplices, Lucky and Nelly Hare, as they flee Edinburgh and evade retribution. Sloan blends historical research with suspenseful storytelling, continuing the atmospheric style established in The Edinburgh Skating Club.
