The night I was officially declared dead, my husband gave an interview about how it would finally help him focus on the championship.

I woke up in the neurology ward with no memory of the crash that put me there, or the six months before it. The nurses told me my name was Zoe Kane, and that my husband, Jack Stacey, was the hottest driver in the series. He arrived with roses and a tenderness that felt like a memory I couldn't quite grasp. He called me his lucky charm.

But the luck felt thin. Every time his mother, Claudette Stacey, visited, the air went cold. She’d adjust my blankets and say, “You gave us such a scare, darling. Jack was a wreck. Of course, the team still needed him.” And Jack would nod, his hand slipping from mine to check the time. The press releases stacked up on my bedside table, all about his triumphant return to the track, his resilience, the “Phoenix” narrative they were building. My amnesia was a sidebar. A complication.

Back home, the emptiness was louder than the city outside our apartment. Jack was at the garage, at meetings, at sponsor dinners. I was surrounded by the life of a woman I didn’t remember—photos of a smiling Zoe clinging to his arm, a closet full of clothes that felt like a costume. Then I found the betting slip, tucked in a box of his childhood things. Date-stamped two weeks before our courthouse wedding. *$10,000 on Jack Stacey to marry Zoe Curtin before the season finale.* His friend Newt’s handwriting. Paid out at 5-to-1.

The migraines started then, blinding flashes that brought visions of a rain-slicked track, screaming tires. The doctors called it PTSD, a side effect of the head trauma. I’d wake up shaking, and Jack would be on the other side of the bed, his back to me, earphones in, watching race footage. When I finally confronted him with the slip, he laughed. “That was just Newt being an idiot. A dumb joke. You’re really going to let a piece of paper from five years ago mess with your head now?”

That’s what I became. The mess. The distraction. Claudette told him I was fragile, that my memory issues and these new “episodes” were a liability. “She’s not the girl you married, Jack. That Zoe was strong.” And he listened. He started taking his manager’s calls in another room. The photo from the gala—the one where he’s smiling with his ex, Rosetta Lumley, his hand a little too low on her back—was captioned “The Dream Team.”

The final race of the season, the one that would crown him champion, was in Austin. He packed his bag while I sat on the bed, a phantom pain burning up my leg from the scars he never seemed to see. “I have to go,” he said, not meeting my eyes. “It’s everything we’ve worked for.”

I looked at the suitcase, at the man who bet on our love, who built a career on my near-death, and I finally remembered the feeling I’d been missing. The feeling of being alone in a room with him.

Did he ever love me, or just the win I represented? And when I walk away with the one truth my broken brain managed to save, will he even notice I’m gone?
