Although the best scholar in the convent and a pride to Sister Francis, Ruby was not quite so good at keeping her own temper in check and she was as stubborn as a mule.

Jack told Ruby that Mrs McKinnon, the housekeeper, was from Edinburgh originally and that she was just a dote.

‘The McKinnons, now some say they have been at the castle forever, as long as the FitzDeanes. My father, he said that’s not true and that his grandfather remembered the first McKinnon who came after the famine and never left. They were bad days they were. The McKinnons, they come from a family of land agents in Scotland and there has been a McKinnon at Ballyford ever since that time.’

‘God in heaven, you don’t think he has another woman do you, Mrs McKinnon? I mean, in Liverpool? Maybe that’s why he is setting up a new house there. He wouldn’t take a mistress in Liverpool, would he?’

Amy turned back and put the kettle onto the range. She had meant to whisper her question. It was one that had been playing on her mind for some time. She felt for Lord FitzDeane.

‘I was only making polite conversation and trying to explain. It’s not like things are normal around here, is it, with a grieving mad woman in the nursery and five small coffins lying in the tomb.’

‘You have a nice reading voice,’ she said softly. ‘They taught you well at the convent. Wuthering Heights was always my favourite as a girl.’

‘It was mine,’ said Ruby, full of enthusiasm. ‘My mother used to read it to me all the time. I think it was hers, too. Fancy that would ye. We all have the same book as our favourite.’

As Ruby examined the van, she wondered if Jack would help when she finally put her escape plan into action. For now she was just happy to have a day off. She had never before had a day off from anything. Despite Sunday being a day of rest, it was prayers, church and jobs

Not at all, ’tis you who looks grand. Ye look just like Rita Hayworth, doesn’t she, Tony? If I hadn’t known it was you coming through that door, Ruby, I’d have thought she had checked into the hotel herself.’

If Charles had simply needed company tonight, he could have taken himself to London and spent a few nights at his club. He would have met friends for dinner and found any number of young ladies willing to supply what he was looking for. It always amazed him how much easier it was to persuade the daughter of a duke to bend to his will than it was the daughter of a docker.

Charles had considered taking a mistress and keeping her in London, but he realized that wasn’t for him. Charles adored the dockers’ daughters, these Liverpool girls most of all.

It worked. It always did. Charles had no idea how much Rory loathed the FitzDeanes. If he had any notion that Rory had spent his life winning his trust and favour, while all the time despising him, he would have been shocked to his core
