Before the First Phone Comes Home is written for parents who are still in the decision-making window—before the device is purchased, not after. It offers a pre-purchase readiness framework and a staged introduction plan designed to help families move from uncertainty to a concrete, revisable approach, without relying on fear-based arguments or fixed rules that ignore individual children.

The book opens with the readiness question and walks parents through structured conversations to have before buying. A practical readiness audit helps identify where a child is prepared and where gaps remain, using observable patterns rather than a pass-fail score. Parents learn what to ask, what to listen for, and how to distinguish a child's readiness from peer or social pressure.

From there, the book covers a three-phase staged introduction—from calls and texts only, through a curated set of apps, to fuller access—alongside guidance on selecting a device and plan and configuring parental controls at the account level. A chapter on initial setup walks through the administrative steps for both Apple and Android environments.

The family agreement section treats the document as a living one: how to write it together, how to recognize when it needs revision, and how to rebuild after a rule is broken. Chapters address the first month's common friction points, the landscape of social media and messaging apps, and how to keep conversation going once the phone becomes routine.

Two appendices—a printable readiness audit checklist and a family agreement template—support the conversations and decisions described throughout the book.
