Sarah Helm

Sarah Helm grew up in North Yorkshire and studied English at Cambridge University. Her first job in journalism was on the Yorkshire Evening Press from where she moved to the Press Association and then The Sunday Times.

A founder member of the staff of The Independent, she was the paper’s Home Affairs Correspondent for three years before moving to the foreign desk as Diplomatic Editor. She covered the first Gulf War in Washington then went to Jerusalem in the early 90s as a Middle East correspondent, then to Brussels to cover the EU and NATO.

Since leaving the staff of the Independent she has written two books: A Life in Secrets is a biography of an SOE spy mistress, who investigated Nazi war crimes. The second, If this is a Woman, published in January 2015, tells the inside story of Ravensbrück — the Nazi concentration camp for women. Her play, Loyalty, about the Iraq war, was performed at the Hampstead Theatre in 2011.

Sarah lives in London with her husband and two daughters.
