Sarah Mitchell studied law at Cambridge University and worked as a barrister in London for nearly twenty years. She later moved into writing and based her first novel on her family’s experiences during the Second World War.

The Lost Letters (2018) explores the effects of war on women and children. Her second novel, The Couple (2019), is a psychological thriller that centres on moral conflict and the influence of a former relationship. She continued to write fiction that follows the private lives of characters shaped by pressure and uncertainty in The English Girl (2021) and Letters to a Stranger (2023).

Her most recent novel, The Perfect Wife (2025), follows Claire Ashford, who wakes in a hospital after an apparent suicide attempt. Her last memory is from three days earlier. As she observes inconsistencies in her husband’s account, she becomes aware that her daily life has been controlled. The story sets out the gradual return of her memory and the discovery that her husband has been drugging her, removing her phone and limiting her contact with others.

Mitchell lives in North Norfolk with her husband and three older children.
