“This, O Best Beloved, is another story of the High and Far-Off Times…”

On the banks of the turbid Amazon, long before animals were quite what they are today, a prickly Hedgehog, a solid Tortoise, and a very puzzled Painted Jaguar collide in a battle of wits rather than claws. What begins as a night of confusion and clever wordplay becomes a tale of adaptation, cooperation, and surprise—one that explains how two unlikely creatures became something entirely new.

The Beginning of the Armadillos is one of Rudyard Kipling’s beloved Just So Stories, written with musical language, gentle irony, and a storyteller’s knowing wink. It is not a lesson disguised as a lecture, but a playful fable where intelligence triumphs over strength and curiosity reshapes the world.

Narrated with warmth and clarity by Richard Stibbard, this timeless story invites listeners of all ages to enjoy Kipling’s rhythm, humor, and imaginative charm—ending, as all good stories should, quite all right, Best Beloved.
