Eighteen years ago, Eli Mercer kissed Jonah Kim—and disappeared before breakfast.

Now he's back in Briarwood with a camera, a three-night assignment, and a duffel bag he has no intention of unpacking.

At thirty-seven, Eli has made a career out of leaving. He's a celebrated documentary photographer who knows how to find beauty in forgotten places, make strangers lower their guard, and disappear before anyone starts expecting him to stay.

Jonah Kim remembers exactly what that feels like.

At forty, Jonah has built a life around the Briarwood Community Library. He's steady, meticulous, devastatingly dry, and exceptionally good at taking care of everyone except himself. The last thing he needs is the man who broke his heart eighteen years ago walking through his doors.

Then a brutal winter storm shuts down the town, knocks out the heat at Eli's inn, and strands him in Jonah's apartment above the library.

One warm room. One narrow bed. Eighteen years of unfinished business.

The chemistry between them hasn't faded. Neither has the hurt. But beneath the stolen kisses and increasingly sleepless nights, something more dangerous is happening: Eli is learning to ask for what he wants, and Jonah is finally learning to say what he needs.

For the first time in his life, Eli wants to unpack his bag.

Then the photography assignment he's dreamed about for years threatens to take him halfway around the world—and the fragile trust they've rebuilt begins to unravel.

Because loving Jonah was never the problem.

The problem was learning how to leave without making goodbye the end of everything.

The Winter He Learned to Stay is a steamy, emotionally intense, standalone MM romance featuring second chances, a snowed-in librarian and photographer, forced proximity, mature heroes, found family, plenty of heat, and a hard-earned happily ever after.
