Cycling the Great Divide

We called it “bikepacking.” (Since then, the term has evolved, and today “bikepacker” is typically applied to mountain bikers who go super-light, foregoing heavily loaded panniers or trailers—and the comforts they hold—by employing a system of innovative rackless packs.)

Adventure Cycling began life in 1974 as Bikecentennial, forming when a group of visionary young bicycle tourists came together with a grand plan: Let’s throw a two-wheeled, 200th-birthday bash for the American Bicentennial, and invite the world to bicycle across the United States!
