Mezzanine and Other Storeys is a collection of short stories for charity, written by established and emerging authors from four continents,
all of whom have donated their time and their work to help our cause. Among them are writers who have won awards for fiction, poetry, screenwriting, music and journalism, including the late, great Graham Joyce.
The collection embraces humour, history and heartbreak as we weave our way through ancient kingdoms and humanitarian work in Africa; short-lived romances played out in a Nottinghamshire fairground and World War II Coventry; and musical cameos from the North Carolina country scene, from a 1980s Indie darling adrift in the south of Ireland, and from Geordie folk-rockers Lindisfarne.
Narrators stepping up to the microphone include a dog with an eye for philosophy, and several voices whose owners’ lives have been changed by
love and loss, by relocating and music-making, or by foodstuffs – from bitter apples to smooth milk chocolate.
We recommend reading Mezzanine and Other Storeys in a quiet place, preferably one with a thought-provoking view. If you’re a couple of storeys up looking down on the oddities of life, so much the better.
