It’s an easy commute, I guess. Well, people tell me it is. I live in the Turnpike Lane-ish area so I get the Victoria line two stops to Blackhorse Road (great name, I know right) I still get excited by some of the stop names, like Mansion House and Island Gardens and – (Singing the song.) Warwick Avenue… Anyway I change at Blackhorse Road and get the Overground – the ginger one – to Barking. It takes me about forty-five minutes. The first couple of weeks were terrifying. I always wanted to cry because I was so tired all the time and I had this stupid idea in my head that I could do all my marking on the commute. Like sit with all the books and tick tick cross sticker sticker smiley-face. But there are no seats. EVER. And people are so rude ‘Excuse me’ or ‘Do you mind?’ and then it’s always like on the day you are covering registration for the head of your department that you happen to get the train which – ‘will be held here to even out gaps in the service’. And I stand there squashed in this sweat gland and I just want to scream STOP STEPPING ON MY FEET AND LET ME SIT DOWN YOU BLOODY DICKHEADS – I’VE BEEN ON MY FEET ALL DAY AND BEEN YELLED AT FOR NINE HOURS STRAIGHT BY A LOAD OF TINY LITTLE SHITS – OH AND YOU, MADAM, WITH YOUR WHOLE FOODS PRODUCE, CLEARLY NEED TO REST YOUR WEARY LEGS FROM A LONG DAY OF SHOPPING FOR ORGANIC VEGETABLES…
    I obviously never do though.
