“Tom was all alone – what was he going to do? Then he remembered something his mother said. She said that if anything were to happen to her, he should go back to her home village of Scrooby, where good people, people called Separatists, would look after him. Should he join the Separatists – the Pilgrim Fathers – on their journey to the new world?”
It’s early in the 17th century. When we meet Tom he believes he has become an orphan. He has just buried his mother and his father has disappeared (although feeling bitter, Tom hopes that he is dead). Before she died, his mother told him that he should go to Scrooby, her home village. There, some kind people called Separatists would look after him. He sets out for Scrooby and meets up with them. Eventually he joins them on the voyage to the new world.
The story is linked to Lifepath, a Scripture Union project to help Christians in local communities organise events to which they can invite the children from nearby schools. It gives primary school pupils the opportunity to explore the Christian faith through the Lifepath of a well-known historical Christian. Lifepath events are loads of fun with puzzles, wordsearches and more, which help children explore basic Christian teaching and the impact that God's message can make on people's lives.
