Through engaging assignments, this integrated curriculum course design introduces the physics of sound and music, with the exploration of musical styles and their biological effect, along with the newer disciplines of Music Therapy and Sound & Vibrational Healing. While the course is designed for grades 5–6, educators will find a variety of applications and inspiration from individual units, as well as the full eight week cycle.

This course is designed to enable students to explore the vibrational and musical aspects of sound. Students will be provided with the knowledge and skills essential to understanding the physics of sound and music. Students will also be challenged to question how the music they listen to affects them. The primary purpose of this course is to provide students with the tools they will need to integrate musical and scientific concepts. A focus in this course is the introduction of the possible adverse and therapeutic effects of music, sound and vibration. The last two units culminate with an exploration of the healing effects of sound and music. Through the measurement of pulse, heart rate and respiration, students will connect natural rhythms with musical rhythms. During the course students will participate in experiential labs, class discussions, performance tasks and homework assignments. Students will be asked to self-assess and reflect on the concepts presented in the various units. Weekly learning activities are designed to inspire involvement and excite interest in connecting Music, Sound and Vibration.
