A Little Garrison

“A Little Garrison” is a novel by a German novelist, playwright, and lieutenant in the Prussian Army, Fritz Oswald Bilse. In the book, Bilse reflects on his experiences carrying service in the Prussian army, which he joined in 1896. The book is a satire, and Bilse exposes the Forbach garrison's manners and the Prussian military in general. No wonder his creation became scandalously successful, leading to several re-editions and hearings in the court-martial trial taking place at Metz from 9 to 13 November 1903. As a result of the hearings, Bilse was sentenced to six months of imprisonment, and the book became even more famous.
