This edition is edited for an American audience and includes an eight-page photo insert section with 12 color photos.
Man's Best Friends features inspiring stories of canine bravery, heroism, and loyalty. They're heartwarming stories that will appeal to dog lovers.
The dogs featured in the book are from around the world, with about half from the U.S. and Canada. The subjects include trained military and rescue dogs as well as everyday pets who step in to protect their loved ones in moments of crisis.
Highlights include dogs that discovered a German spy in World War I, led a blind man to safety in the World Trade Center on September 11, rescued an 85-year-old Floridian woman from an alligator attack, and learned how to use an ATM on behalf of a disabled veteran.
There's one chapter on German shepherds and one chapter about the Siberian huskies who delivered diphtheria serum in Alaska along the Iditarod Trail in 1925.
In the U.S., dogs are without question the most popular pets. It's estimated that 37 to 47 percent of households have at least one dog and that 70 to 80 million dogs are owned.
The book will be out in time for National Dog Day (August 26).
