Nicaragua's Pacific Lowlands: Rivas & Isla Ometepe

Sandwiched between the Pacific Ocean and Lago de Nicaragua, is the Pacific Lowlands region of Nicaragua. Rivas is readily walkable and most sights are in close proximity to each other, so there is no better way to see the town than on foot. Begin by admiring the flocks of parakeets that congregate in the trees at the Parque Central. Cross to the east side of the street to see the interior of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Pedro. On the south side of the cathedral is the birthplace of former President Violeta Barrios de Chamorro. Walk east 2½ blocks to the Biblioteca Pública de Rivas, next to Bancentro, to admire the 17th-century architecture. Continue west for one block to explore the Iglesia de San Francisco. San Jorge is best known for its bustling port, from which ferries head to Isla Ometepe. Though most travelers breeze right through, San Jorge is a pleasant place in its own right. Nicaraguan families consider San Jorge to be a destination in itself, taking advantage of the lakefront beaches, wide swaths of volcanic sand, and gorgeous views of Isla Ometepe. It's easy to spend much longer than you intended on beautiful Isla Ometepe. The relaxed lifestyle is contagious, and there are plenty of scenic adventure activities to participate in as you explore the island. The name “Ometepe” means “two hills,” in Nahuatl. The origin of the name is not difficult to discern: the twin volcanoes of Concepción and Maderas punctuate the landscape and at least one of them is visible from virtually anywhere on the island, a constant reminder of how the island was formed.
