The story is in the form of the author’s recollection of a mescaline trip which had taken place over the course of an afternoon.

The title of the book comes from a phrase from “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell” a poem composed by William Blake.

The author describes all the insights he had had during his experiences. Some of the insights were purely aesthetic and some in the form of sacramental vision.

He also describes those reflections which present the meaning of his experience for art and religion.
