Construction of the palace started in 1904, during the reign of Sisavang Vong, and took 20 years. It was built by the French for the Lao king, in an attempt to bind him and his family more tightly to the colonial system of government

Luang Prabang is a small town and the best way to explore is either on foot or by bicycle. Bicycles can be hired from most guesthouses for 20,000 kip per day. For longer journeys, such as out to the waterfalls, tuk-tuks and saamlors are available for hire. Motorbikes here are more expensive than elsewhere in Laos, costing up to 16,000 kip per day.
