“Can you imagine being at work every 3 minutes… and someone stops you from doing what you want or gets in the way of you getting what you want? You’d get really pissed off after a while. That’s like life as a kid.”

Intimacy begins with our sensual intelligence. Awareness and engagement, rather than fixation and attachment to our body, is power, deeply felt.

Your task is not to seek love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself
that you have built against it.

We’re encouraged to ‘suck it up’ instead of learning to express how we really feel. We are, however, encouraged to eat more, lose weight, buy stuff we don’t need, stuff ourselves with designer pills, suck down Marlboro Lights, Red Bull, play Angry Birds, and confess sins and sorrows to a bottle, bartender, and shrink.

Neuropsychologist Dr. Rick Hanson concurs, “Can you imagine being at work every 3 minutes… and someone stops you from doing what you want or gets in the way of you getting what you want? You’d get really pissed off after a while. That’s like life as a kid.” It’s how we’re trained around touch, desire, play, and pleasure.

Look, when we bump our elbow hard enough to feel the shooting pain through our body, we immediately reach for the bruised place and rub it. Soothe the pain with deep breaths and tenderness. Sure, a flood of expletives will probably spill out, but hey, a well-timed ‘Fuck!’ does wonders. Point is we still touch ourselves when we feel pain.

A FEW CONSCIOUS, dedicated self-pleasure moments - mindfully, with our thought and our fingers - are essential for well being because they unlock the physiological effects of stress. These moments inspire warmth, trust, and a calm relationship with ourselves.

We live in highly agitated states. Constantly preparing for perceived needs and threats, and frustrated about what we don’t have. Spiraling in critical inner dialogue spurs us to contract, contract, contract, often unconsciously.
