SEED PRODUCTION AND QUALITY CONTROL

A seed is a small embryonic plant enclosed in a covering called the seed coat, usually with some stored food. It is the product of the ripened ovule of gymnosperm and angiosperm plants which occurs after fertilization and some growth within the mother plant. The formation of the seed completes the process of reproduction in seed plants, with the embryo developed from the zygote and the seed coat from the integuments of the ovule. All seeds are different size, shape and colour. Production of genetically pure and otherwise good quality pedigree seed is an exacting task requiring high technical skills and comparatively heavy financial investment. This book focuses on some of the very important aspects related to seed technology. It contains chapters covering different aspects related to seed production, quality control, seed processing, packaging, seed physiology and related issues. This book will definitely serve as an excellent reference material and practical guide for students of seed technology, agriculture, horticulture, botany, forestry and life sciences.
