Charles Francis Adams, Sr., (August 18, 1807 – November 21, 1886) was an American editor, politician and diplomat.He was the son of President John Quincy Adams and grandson of President John Adams.

This Speech was delivered during the election of 1860, with a view towards encouraging northern conservatives to support the Republican presidential candidate, Abraham Lincoln against pro slavery and status quo candidates.
