“Childhood” is the first novel of Gorky's three autobiographical novels. In this novel, the author describes the protagonist Alyosha's life before ten year’s old, narrates the growth and life experience of Alyosha, and describes the stifling, full of terrible images of the narrow world. Alyosha lived in a poor and hard life with his grandparents since his father died at his four years old. Alyosha’s Grandfather has a ambivalent and complex character, there was good side in his grandfather’s heart, but greed corroded his soul. In this cold world, only Alyosha’s grandmother protected and cared for him. She gave him endless warmth and love, also provided a useful guidance for him.
