My final great career shaper was a stint in the Marine Corps. I joined after high school in the early ’60s and soon learned the meaning of the Marine motto, “Gung-Ho,” Chinese for “work together.” The Corps taught me several applicable lessons, among them:
• No organization works without a clear chain of command.
• Leadership is most effective when done from the front.
• Planning is central to the success of any mission.
• Good moral is invaluable for sustaining team effort in the face of adversity.
• A unit’s (department’s) ability and flexibility in meeting the challenges of changing situations is reliant on the efficient organization of its supplies.
• In all situations, determination, clear thinking, and quick decision making based on good information will be the deciding factors.
