Its been recorded by among others U2, Thin Lizzy, Gary Moore, Grateful Dead Metallica, Simple Minds, Peter Paul and Mary and Roger Whittaker but its the recordings by The Dubliners in the 1960s that gained the song wide exposure. The Thin Lizzy recording won a Grammy award for this song as did the Metallica version in 1998. The origins of the song are unclear but this famous traditional song along with Leaving of Liverpool belong to the most popular among Irish folk songs. It closely resembles the broadside ballad Patrick Fleming and most likely dates back to around 1650
