The Seventh Ohio Volunteer Cavalry was recruited on an order emanating from the War Department, that Gov. Todd, of Ohio, would raise one Regiment of Cavalry, for “Border Service,” the Ohio River then being the boundary. In writing this history, the author has endeavored to do exact justice to all, so far as the author knew, and if there are any errors in this narrative, it is that of omission, having had to write exclusively from memory, and in all probability there are omissions. While the author would not deprive any regiment of her laurels, he believes the 7th O. V. C., for the services rendered and the number of times she was under fire, stands second to no regiment from Maine to California.
