ABOUT THE BOOK

Training your dog is a crucial step in the process of pet ownership, and there’s no doubt that it takes both patience and persistence. Whether you are getting the dog as a puppy or adopting at an older age, dog training is an important step in bringing the dog into your home as it helps to establish the proper roles between owner and pet.

You will also quickly learn that there are a lot of training options and opinions from others on the right and wrong way to train your pet. Although not easy (especially for some breeds), the rewards of training your dog are immense – for both of you.

EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK

No matter what type of dog you have, there are two things you need to do in order to train them: punish, and reward. In general, dogs aim to please their owners, so when they sense anger, they obey (punishment). They can also be made happy with just a few key items: food, love, and the great outdoors (reward). In order to ensure that both you and your pet are happy, you need to use both.

Depending on the relationship you want to establish, as well as your beliefs on the treatment of dogs, the acts behind punishment will vary. Ignoring your dog can be a very effective way of telling him/her that you aren’t rewarding the behavior. For example, if your dog is jumping on you when you walk in the door, ignore him. According to PetEducation.com, if your dog jumps, “swivel and walk away, not giving the dog any attention.” This will teach him/her to not jump because they aren’t getting what they want.
