The aim of this book is to introduce a model of the UK’s first past the post (FPTP) electoral process. The hope here is that the model may be useful to explain the data that are aggregated when comparing the percentage of votes cast for party candidates nationally to the percentage of party membership of the MPs in the House of Commons. This is because there has been increasing discussion by my fellow citizens about the representativeness or otherwise of Parliament, especially post 2016. The variance between the two parameters could conceivably be one of the measures of how optimal an electoral system is in delivering a representative democracy. To enable a comparison with alternatives to FPTP, I shall demonstrate the D’Hondt method using the 2019 EU Election results for Scotland and the Single Transferable Vote method using the 2019 EU Election results for Northern Ireland.
