A young girl inadvertently stumbles upon a harsh magical universe called Nowhere, where she meets several people who either want to kill her, want to save her, or cannot offer any help at all. Through periods of suffering, brought on by the wretched Queen, the girl develops a taste for vengeance. Only, it would seem, everyone is a little bit more than they appear to be.

The girl, Jane Thannery, has been staying with her grandfather while her parents are getting divorced and her brother is at camp. As she does an errand for him, she falls through the floor of an abandoned store, and straight into Nowhere. From there, she is almost immediately locked up by the magical, mischievous Queen Violet, who has not only imprisoned the King, but turned him into a talking panda. Every time Jane escapes, she is locked up again, creating a bloodlust in the girl that cannot be quenched any other way than the death of the Queen, and people have been so inspired by this girl's mistreatment that they gather together to storm the castle. When the battle is over, Jane finds out more than she wanted to, not just about the people she has met, but about Nowhere itself.

Inspired by the authors of Oxford, England, and written in rhyming verse, Monsters in the Mirror is the product of both old and new imaginations, and is unlike many books on the market.
