Marie is just an ordinary girl living in a cult-like community in a small town. On the night Marie decided to skip the required spiritual celebration with her best friend, they encountered an evil they didn't know exist in their community. Thus, as Marie saw it, this act of rebellion, caused her to witness the death of her best friend and leaving her wounded both physically and emotionally.
