“Lies. Sarcasm is great. You can say anything and pretend you’re joking. People think I’m hilarious when in reality I’m just an asshole.”
“Yeah, but you’re my asshole … That sounded extremely wrong.”
Maddox snorts. “Maybe that should be in our wedding vows.”

“You? Violent? Okay.”
“You’re forgetting my form of violence—I get you to do it for me. My little attack dog, you.” I wrap my arm around her and give her a noogie.
“Careful or I’ll turn my violence onto you.”
“Never. You love me.”
“I do. I’m happy to have you in my life.”
My eyes narrow. “But?”
“No but. You’re my best friend.” Tears pool in her eyes.
“Are you dying?”
She shoves me. “I can’t be serious every once in a while?”
“No.”
“Whatever, I hate you again.”
“There’s my Stacy.”

“I have a confession to make,” Maddox says as soon as I climb into bed next to him.
My arms snake around him and bring him close to me so his head is on my chest. “You’re actually married and have three kids.”
“You know about Stella and the triplets?”
“Stella? Really?”

“How did you know I was here?” I ask.
“Tracking app on your phone,” he says simply. When my mouth drops open, he smirks. “What, I can’t make jokes?”

“You’re one of us now,” Skylar says to Maddox.
“One of you?” he asks.
“Damon told Rebecca, who told me, who told everyone, you two are officially together now. So, that means you’re one of us.”
“One of us. One of us,” Noah chants.
“Do I get to learn a secret handshake? If there’s no handshake, I’m not interested.”
“Here’s a handshake for you,” Noah says and flips him off.

I think in the world of priorities for Damon, it goes baseball, sex, food. But if this makes him smile like that? I’ll gladly stay here all night if he wants to.

I step back. “Whoa. Way too soon. I meant serious as in maybe calling each other the boyfriend label.”

“Dinner’s almost ready,” Mom says. Aunt Cheri stares at Mom in silent question. “I have a vegan option for you,” she adds.
Still a nutcase. Vegetarians, I can forgive. Vegans? Are they even real humans?
