The end of the poem reads: “quod amantem iniuria talis / cogit amare magis, sed bene velle minus.” (My English translation would be: “because such harm / drives the lover to love more, but like less,” though Francis Warre Cornish’s prose translation reads: “Because such an injury as this drives a lover to be more of a lover, but less of a friend”
