I glance around us, then pull her into an alcove. “I’ve got something to tell you.”

Her face falls. “Oh god, what have you done—”

I grip her chin and plant a kiss on her lips. It’s my new, nice way of getting her to shut up. Always works like a charm.

Christ, I might not swindle men for their money anymore, but they sure are easy to fool in other ways.

I jump at his sudden warning slicing through the silence. When I don’t reply, he pops open an eye and smirks at me sleepily. “Never mind, you’re just admiring the view again.”

“No I’m not.” Yes I am. “I’m thinking.”

“Does it hurt?”

“Shut up.”

“Stalagmites,” Rafe says, watching me. “Produced by precipitation of minerals from water dripping through the cave ceiling.”

“Stalactites.”

“I’m sorry?”

“Stalagmites rise up from the floor, stalactites hang from the ceiling.”

I don’t move. First of all, why the fuck should I? He’s got legs too. Second of all, “come here” means I have to go ‘“over there” and “there” is where bad decisions are made.

“Figures. A jug?” He surveys my off-white counters, squinting in displeasure. “A bong?”

His passive-aggressive dig at my apartment brings me back to my senses. “I have a trash can you can use. You can throw yourself in it too, if you’d like.”

Our security men stare at me like I’ve lost my mind. I don’t know why, because it’s not exactly a revelation.

She sighs. “You’re just a heartbroken little fool, aren’t you?”

“What gave it away?” I ask dryly.

Her eyes fall to my feet in sad bemusement. “The novelty lucky socks. Oh, and the fact you’ve hardly moved from this position all week.”
