Cawthon gained prominence with the release of the Five Nights at Freddy's game in 2014. The game's success led to multiple sequels and a large fan following.

In December 2015, Cawthon released his first novel, Five Nights at Freddy's: The Silver Eyes. The book was released as an ebook on Amazon and came earlier than planned due to an Amazon error.
