Sturla Henriksen is a Norwegian writer specialising in ocean policy and sustainability. He is best known as the author of The Ocean (2025). He is also recognised for his career in international shipping and as Special Advisor, Ocean, to the United Nations Global Compact.
Sturla Henriksen was born in Norway and educated at the University of Oslo, graduating with the degree of Cand. Oecon. His further education included the Norwegian Army Officer School, the BI Institute of Business Administration, the Norwegian Defence College and the Advanced Management Program at INSEAD in France.
Henriksen began his career with positions in the Norwegian Armed Forces, the Norwegian Central Bureau of Statistics, the Norwegian Ministry of Finance, the European Free Trade Association in Geneva and the European Commission Services in Brussels.
In 1992, he became Director and Chief Economist at the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association. In 1998, he founded Context Consulting AS, where he served as Chief Executive Officer until 2005. He then joined Accenture Management Consulting as a Senior Executive and Partner until 2008.
From 2008 to 2017, he served as the Chief Executive Officer of the Norwegian Shipowners’ Association. After leaving that role, he worked as Director and Partner at Astrup Fearnley Asset Management from 2020 to 2021.
On January 1, 2018, he became Special Advisor to the Ocean, United Nations Global Compact. In this role, he chairs ocean-related projects with corporations, research institutions, regulatory bodies and national governments.
Sturla Henriksen has also served on the boards of the International Chamber of Shipping and the European Community of Shipowners' Associations. He was deputy chair of the Council of Det Norske Veritas and a member of the board of the Thomas Wilhelmsen Foundation.
From 2018 to 2020, he was a member of the China Council Task Force on Green Maritime Operations, advising the Chinese government. He is currently a member of the board of the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs. Henriksen serves on the Advisory Board for the Executive Ocean Leadership Program at the University of Tromsø, now known as the Arctic University of Norway.
His book, The Ocean (2025), explores the ocean’s influence on human history, society, and the future of the planet. The work examines naval power, the paradox of abundance and mismanagement, and the connections between ocean health and climate stability.
Sturla Henriksen has described the book as “a guide for policymakers, environmentalists, and anyone seeking to understand our most significant shared resource.”
