The news of the Brighton bombing was deeply disturbing not just for Mrs Thatcher and her party, but for the country as a whole. It will go down in history as just that kind of shocking incident, along with events such as the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963 and the attack on the World Trade Center in New York nearly forty years later, that made a deep impression in people’s minds.
