The truth about the meaning of “humanity” is that there’s no truth. No absolute truth, at least. Every generation defines it according to its own preoccupations and circumstances. So, for example, the humanism of the original Renaissance was rooted in discovering and then reconnecting with a history that had been lost in the Dark Ages.
