John Hubbard: I have to say that one of the most enjoyable experiences of working with John (McLean) was the fun side of things. He was a fun guy, but he was a taskmaster. He was tough to work with, but I needed it as a young guy. He used to ‘kick my butt’ and get me going. I always felt inspired when I spoke with John about a scientific or a technical subject. I can remember on one occasion sitting in the Chateau Lemoyne Hotel on Rue Dauphine in New Orleans, drinking my very first Budweiser. John was drinking his magnificent martinis.
