In the back alleys of 1850s London, a prize fighter-turned-evangelist goes after the devil, armed with a fabled "Hammer of Heaven" right-hand punch. Fast-paced and gripping, comic and tragic by turns, it is a spectacular fiction debut.

Shifting wildly in time and space at what seems like every opportunity, the drug-filled chapters in Burroughs’ novel are meant to be read in any order. Burroughs’ famous “cut-up” technique was meant to mirror the spastic, jangly workings of a junkie’s mind, and in this book, the mania of addiction becomes an actual alternate universe. Watch your step.

Well you're about to be in for a ride with this one. The Orange Eats Creeps is about a gang of “slutty teenage hobo vampire junkies” on the hunt for blood and cough syrup in the Pacific Northwest of the ’90s, and it reads like a drug-induced stream-of-consciousness nightmare, the reader just barely clinging along for the ride. Down from the rabbit hole and into Wonderland itself. Of course this is one big "is this a dream or was I really there" kind of moment? From the Queen of Hearts to the Mad Hatter, there is no lack of wacky characters.

In a Tokyo suburb a young man named Toru Okada searches for his wife's missing cat. Soon he finds himself looking for his wife as well in a netherworld that lies beneath the placid surface of Tokyo. As these searches intersect, Okada encounters a bizarre group of allies and antagonists: a psychic prostitute; a malevolent yet mediagenic politician; a cheerfully morbid sixteen-year-old-girl; and an aging war veteran who has been permanently changed by the hideous things he witnessed during Japan's forgotten campaign in Manchuria.
