Credit Ann Leckie for kicking it old school—not just “let’s fiddle with SF clichés” old school, but “let’s fiddle with SF clichés and cast it in the style of a 19th Century epistolary novel” old school. Which is about as old school as you can get. It’s Ms. Leckie’s debut story, and an auspicious one at that. Just don’t ask her about the well.
