The European Union is the most successful regional organisation in the world. ASEAN is the most successful regional organisation in Asia. The story of the important and multi-faceted relationship between these two organisations has seldom been told. This is the first book about the relationship, written from the ASEAN perspective. It contains essays from all the ten ASEAN countries. The book describes the many areas in which ASEAN and the EU have convergent interests and, the few areas in which they have divergent views. The book also looks to the future and suggests some possible areas of cooperation. The Foreword is written by Singapore's Foreign Minister, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.Contents: ForewordAbout the ContributorsOur Engagement and Cooperation:ASEAN and EU: From Donor-Recipient Relations to Partnership with a Strategic Purpose (Yeo Lay Hwee)ASEAN-EU Economic Relations: A Shared Present and Future (Pushpanathan Sundram)Political and Security Cooperation Between ASEAN and the EU (V P Hirubalan)Our Similarities and Differences:ASEAN and EU: Similarities and Differences (Tommy Koh)A Few Things That ASEAN has Outdone the EU (Termsak Chalermpalanupap)Human Rights in the ASEAN-EU Relationship: Finding Common Ground (Shashi Jayakumar)Convergence and Divergence: ASEAN's and the EU's Responses to the Rohingya Crisis (Noeleen Heyzer and Lilianne Fan)Diverse and Evolving Bilateral Ties:Brunei Darussalam-European Union Relations: Moving Beyond Diplomatic Niceties (Osman Patra)Cambodia-EU Relations: Beyond Everything-but-Arms?
