When priest Pundit Ramdharrie Siewdass-Maharaj arrives in Trinidad in 1889 following a treacherous journey from India, he is struck by the beauty and the sadness he finds there.
Passionate about the injustices he sees around him, his life takes on an even deeper dimension as he tries to reconcile his frustration at the tacit slavery he sees around him with the annoyance at his wider experience of being born into a British colony.
While this spiritual battle rages inside him, he begins to build a life for himself and his extended family. This life is filled with the kindnesses of others. His spiritual approach to life becomes as influential to those around him as his religious teachings, and his growing family will need all the support and goodwill his presence has generated if they are to survive and prosper through years of hard work and struggle.
