Observations on Church and State

This scholarly essay is about the church in Scotland in the 19th century. At that time, Scotland was largely Presbyterian. The author has as a subtitle, 'Suggested by the Duke of Argyll's essay'. He (Ferrier) argues that the principal value of the Reformation and the rejection of the Catholic church in Scotland, has been beneficial because it removed the concept of Divinity from the clergy, thus making them equal to their parishioners.
