After coming home from a journey to attend her friend's wedding, Ayrila finds that her mother Queen Hildir has gone to reason with various citizens and councilmen of Vellir. After Ayrila talks briefly with her childhood friend Derrir, she gets a message bearing news she dreads: she must live with her father. While dwelling in her father's house, Ayrila is put into grave circumstances and must learn to use her rare time magic.
