Lord George Gordon Byron

Don Juan

    But who, alas! can love, and then be wise?
  • Ils Mhas quoted6 years ago
    They had not spoken; but they felt allured,
    As if their souls and lips each other beckon'd,
    Which, being join'd, like swarming bees they clung—
    Their hearts the flowers from whence the honey sprung.
    They were alone, but not alone as they
    Who shut in chambers think it loneliness;
    The silent ocean, and the starlight bay,
    The twilight glow which momently grew less,
    The voiceless sands and dropping caves, that lay
    Around them, made them to each other press,
    As if there were no life beneath the sky
    Save theirs, and that their life could never die.

    And, oh! if e'er I should forget, I swear—
    But that 's impossible, and cannot be—
    Sooner shall this blue ocean melt to air,
    Sooner shall earth resolve itself to sea,
    Than I resign thine image, oh, my fair!
    Or think of any thing excepting thee;
    A mind diseased no remedy can physic

    Man 's a phenomenon, one knows not what,
    And wonderful beyond all wondrous measure;
    'T is pity though, in this sublime world, that
    Pleasure 's a sin, and sometimes sin 's a pleasure;
    Few mortals know what end they would be at,
    But whether glory, power, or love, or treasure,
    The path is through perplexing ways, and when
    The goal is gain'd, we die, you know—and then—
    What then?—I do not know, no more do you—
    And so good night.
